Canvas has traditionally been the preferred support for oil and acrylic paintings but new formulations for surface preparation have made it a wonderful surface for the subtle nature of watercolour.
Canvas or canvas panels expressly for watercolour use are now readily available for purchase.
Using several layers of absorbent ground medium on regular canvas is another option in preparing the painting surface.
Working on these surfaces becomes an additive and subtractive painting process.
Watercolour paint may be painted on with ease as well as readily lifted away when dry to reveal the original white of the canvas. Using staining colours will slightly affect this result.
Margaret plans to feature spring/summer landscape and flowers in this workshop.
